Kathiravan aka Kathir (Vijay Sethupathi) is a rowdy whose only aim is to run a bar on his own. He has just been released from jail after serving a five-year sentence for taking blame for a crime he did not commit on the orders of the local area councillor (G.M. Sundar), who had promised him a posh lifestyle once he is released. Meanwhile, a young Villupuram-based engineering graduate Yazhini (Madonna Sebastian), leaves for Chennai against her parents’ wishes to pursue her career in the IT sector. When the company she works for shuts down, she begins to face financial hardships and soon settles down in a housing colony. Her neighbour is Kathir. Though both of them dislike each other in the beginning, they gradually warm up to each other despite their different backgrounds and become a sort of support system for each other.
Facing pressure from her family over her career and wedding, Yazhini introduces Kathir to her parents as her boyfriend who is a successful manager in an IT company. The parents decide to fix their marriage but change their mind after seeing Kathir thrashing two men opposite a temple, realising that he is a rowdy. They bar Yazhini from returning to Chennai, even forbidding her to attend an important job interview. Meanwhile, Kathir starts a gang war by beating up the henchmen of a rival gangster (Samuthirakani). The councillor decides that Kathir should kill his rival. After ensuring that Yazhini attends her interview, he proceeds to kill the rival gangster, but he ends up being stabbed by an iron rod and loses consciousness.
Some months later, Yazhini has become a project manager and has vacated the housing colony. But she keeps thinking about Kathir, whom she never saw again after her interview. However, she soon finds him working at a petrol bunk, having abandoned his rowdy past.
